Students achieve Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award

On Monday morning the group independently completed a self-led orienteering activity around Lea Green site, using maps and punch cards.

On Monday afternoon, the silver group participated in an activity led by qualified Lea Green instructors.  This included the Skyline course on site at Lea Green. All the young people participated in this activity and completed the three sections of the course. It was incredible to observe the determination and resilience of the young people as they overcame a mix of obstacles.  The activity was a challenge to the young people’s respect of heights.

On Tuesday morning, the second day, the students walked and navigated themselves on a circular walk from the Lea Green centre towards Dethick and back again.  Along the way, visiting a church, reading about the local history and discussing nature and flora/fauna.

After a rest, drink and toilet stop back at Lea Green the group participated in a stream walk wearing full waterproofs.  This activity was led by a Lea Green instructor and tested the student’s balance, cold water immersion and flexibility/mobility to crawl under logs and branches.

Before heading back to school, the students had a hour on the Go-karts and buggies.  The Go-karts and buggies tested the student’s endurance and driving skills.

The Silver group did an amazing job, and we have hopefully created life-long-lasting positive memories which will help to define their experience at Sutherland House School.

In September the group will continue their Award and complete their second year, where we will plan another expedition to Derbyshire in 2027.  Massive congratulations to them for their hard work, dedication, and resilience.
