Students achieve Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award in Derbyshire
- School
July 9, 2026
Four students from Sutherland House School completed their bronze expedition and residential at the Lea Green outdoor activity centre in the near Matlock.
The Duke of Edinburgh helps young people:
- Build Skills
- Volunteer
- Improve fitness
and undertake challenges to achieve either bronze, sliver or gold awards.
Walking and map reading are integral to the Duke of Edinburgh experience.
Day 1 - Hiking and Low Ropes Assault Course
The group were able to participate in a circular walk starting at the High peak Junction, towards the Pump House and into Lea Woods. After the Low Ropes course we drove into Matlock and three students participated in a steep and exhilarating walk along the ridge in Matlock Bath. A visit to the chip shop was well deserved by all!
In the afternoon, the bronze group participated in the Low Ropes Assault course at Lea Green. The Low Ropes Assault course is a mix of balance, strength, teamwork and courage. All the young people participated in this activity and completed the three sections to the assault course. It was incredible to observe the determination and resilience of the young people as they overcame a mix of barriers, beams, ropes, and scrambling nets.
Day 2 - Walking the High peak Trail and Cromford Canal
The students walked and navigated themselves along the High Peak Trail, starting from Black Rocks to the High Peak Junction. After a rest, drink and toilet stop they continued their walk along the Cromford canal to the world heritage site at Cromford Mills. Before returning to school, the group visited Matlock on the way back.
The bronze group did an amazing job, and we have hopefully created life-long-lasting positive memories which will help to define their experience at Sutherland House School.
All the students successfully completed this stage of their Duke of Edinburgh journey, and therefore their bronze award. For three of the students this was their first time away on a school trip and away from their family unit.
Massive congratulations to them for their hard work, dedication, and resilience. Finally a huge thank you to all of the staff who supported the young people on their journey.
