Students from Sutherland House School Achieved Bronze Duke of Edinburgh at Lea Green in Derbyshire
From Thursday the 19th to Friday 20th June five students and four staff from Sutherland House School drove to Lea Green and checked into the Meadow Lodge accommodation for their two day and one night bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition and residential.
Walking and map reading are integral to the Duke of Edinburgh experience. The group were able to start the walk in the midmorning to avoid the hottest part of the day. The group started at High Peak Junction and walked along the Cromford Canal to Cromford Mills for the first drink, snack and toilet stop. We then walked into Matlock and took a circular walk along the River Derwent back into Matlock for a very deserved and well-earned visit to the chip shop! After a visit to the amusements, we returned to Lea Green to unpack bags, choose our room and get ready for the evening.
In the evening the students had a shower, made their food for the following day and cooked their evening food in the kitchen. Some students used their pupils’ voice to play football outside whilst two others relaxed in the accommodation.

In the morning the students packed their bags, removed their bedding and made their breakfast. After this the bronze group participated in a Low Rope assault course and equilibrium activity run and led by Mark, a qualified Lea Green instructor. The Low Ropes Assault course is a mix of balance, strength, teamwork and courage. The young people participated in this activity and completed the three sections to the assault course. It was incredible to observe the determination and resilience of the young people as they overcame a mix of barriers, beams, ropes, and scrambling nets.

For the second walk we returned to High Peak Junction and took a circular walk along the Cromford Canal into Lea Woods and back to the car park. As a celebration for the students successfully completing their two walks and planned activity, we took them to McDonalds and returned to school for their transport home.
The group did an amazing job, and we have hopefully created life long-lasting positive memories which will help to define their experience at Sutherland House School. All the students successfully completed this stage of their Duke of Edinburgh journey and have therefore completed their bronze award. This group will hopefully continue in September for the next stage of their DofE journey, the silver award.
A massive congratulations to them for their hard work, dedication, and resilience. Finally a huge thank you to all of the staff who supported the young people on their journey – your help, support and smiles are appreciated.
